The Children’s Music Web Awards 2003

Actual sticker, suitable for gracing product

The Children’s Music Web Awards are the world’s first internet-based entertainment awards for children’s artists, and the only kid’s entertainment awards truly decided by kids. This is our sixth successful year. Our winners have been publicized on the XM Kids national radio service, in Family Life magazine, and throughout the world via the internet. We feel, and others agree, that it’s about time that kids themselves have a voice in honoring children’s recordings. You can listen to some of the winners of last year's awards on our site.

Here’s how our awards program works: Entrants send in an application, with a fee. This year, the basic fee has been reduced. Entries are first screened by a blue-ribbon panel for appropriateness for kids. Then, entries are sent worldwide to volunteer families or neighbor groups comprised of adults and kids of appropriate ages. The entries are then rated by kids and adults according to specific guidelines for quality such as performance, production values and content. The top scorers in each category, the Finalists, are passed to the next round.

Each of the Finalists are then rated by a total of 100 kids of appropriate ages in 3 volunteer classrooms and day care centers in geographically diverse areas. The kids vote on their favorites using a simplified ballot. In the case of the Baby and Toddler categories, caregivers do the rating. Those recordings that score a composite of 90% or better will then be declared Winners.

We anticipate that we will have approximately 50 winners this year. There may be 10 Winners in one category, and two in another. However, we reserve the right to declare no Winners in a given category, if the scores of none of the entrants reach the highest quality level.

This year, we have two new categories highlighting the work of children as performers- the “By kids, for kids” categories. We hope these categories will draw attention to the fine recordings that kids themselves are creating these days.

Recordings released from April 2002 to April 2003 are eligible for the “Best” categories. No such time restriction applies to the “Classic” and “By Kids” categories. Our Judge’s Special Awards are discretionary awards by the family judging panels, and are not part of the application process.

Winners will be announced in early October 2003 through our website, on the XM Kids national channel, and through multiple media outlets. Winners will receive 1,000 free “spider” stickers. Finalists and Winners will have the right to announce their awards on product and press releases.
