Bring a song-in-progress and get constructive feedback and ideas for improvement from other CMN songwriters (and give feedback to others in turn). Songs can be at any stage in the writing process, but should not be 100% finished and polished. We will use a process adapted from a couple of Philadelphia area songwriting groups. This AG will motivate us to write more songs, and help us to raise the quality of our songs for children & families.

This is not the type of AG that you need to plan to come to regularly - just attend whenever you have a song that you would like to get feedback on. We meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month, from 4:00pm to 5:30pm ET online.

This group is open to CMNers (no charge) and non-members ($25).  Non-members contact us at office@cmnonline.org for a registration code.

For more contact David Heitler-Klevans or Monty Harper, co-facilitators.

Discover how you can make your songs for children truly GREAT! Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned children’s artist, come learn how you can up your songwriting game with award-winning songwriter, columnist and songwriting teacher, Monty Harper.

Monty will present songwriting as a discipline and discuss practices that can help you learn and improve over time. Covering a checklist of items to help you work a song’s first draft up to its best potential, this workshop will explore aspects of writing that make a song work particularly well for children and last for generations.

    MONTY’S BIO:

Monty Harper is a born children’s musician. That is, he didn’t come to it through any other career, but simply began writing songs for kids as a hobby just out of college in 1989. Since then, he has largely made a living writing, performing, and recording songs that appeal to children and adults alike. Monty has won many songwriting awards, is a former songwriting columnist for CMN’s Pass It On, teaches songwriting workshops and residencies, writes songs for clients, helps run two songwriting critique groups, and coaches other songwriters to produce their best work. Monty posts a new original song every Monday morning on YouTube and has close to three hundred original songs available online. His favorite quote from an adult fan is: “Your songs are so much fun, they always make me smile!”

    2026 CMN Conference in Philadelphia!

    LEAD WITH LOVE

Exploring social justice in children's music through Healing, Hope and Harmony in Philadelphia!

Lead with Love in the City of Philadelphia this September!

Join us in Philadelphia—for the 2026 Children’s Music Network Conference. To kick things off, the 2026 conference begins with virtual programming from Sunday, September 20 through Wednesday, September 23, making it possible to join us from anywhere in the world. Then, beginning Friday, September 25, we’ll gather in-person to celebrate the work of children’s music artists, educators, and advocates while building meaningful connections and joyful memories in an inspiring environment that sparks creativity and action.
